Home Safety Checklist: 10-Minute Checks Before Small Problems Become Expensive

Hindi lahat ng home repair nangangailangan agad ng contractor—but some warning signs should never be treated as casual DIY. Use this quick checklist to spot plumbing, electrical and moisture problems early.

SAFETY FIRST

Do not open live electrical equipment, climb an unsafe roof, enter a flooded electrical area or attempt structural repairs without qualified help. A checklist helps you notice problems; it does not replace professional diagnosis.

01 / Water and plumbing

Inspect beneath sinks for drips, stains, moldy smells and corrosion. Check toilets for constant running and note unexplained consumption. If water pressure is poor, compare several outlets before buying a pump. See our water preparation and pressure guide.

02 / Electrical warning signs

Watch for hot plugs, scorched outlets, repeated breaker trips or flickering under normal load. Stop using damaged equipment and consult a licensed professional. Inspect extension cords for cut insulation and overheating; read extension cord safety before connecting powerful tools.

03 / Paint, walls and moisture

Recurring peeling paint, a dark damp patch or a musty odor can suggest underlying water entry. Photograph and track when it appears. Repainting immediately without fixing moisture often repeats the failure.

04 / Roof and drainage

From a safe place, watch for gutter overflow, blocked downpipes, missing or displaced elements and water entry after rain. Do not walk on wet roofing. A professional should assess roof access and structural concerns.

Monthly 10-minute checklist

  1. Look under sinks and around toilets.
  2. Check visible hoses and valves.
  3. Look for hot or damaged plugs—without touching unsafe equipment.
  4. Inspect accessible extension cords.
  5. Look for damp marks and peeling paint.
  6. Observe gutter flow from ground level.
  7. Record changes with date-stamped photos.
